Helaman's Army

Hi Everyone!

Holy cow, this week has been insanely busy. One of those weeks that simultaneously feels like it stretched for a month and was over in an hour. I've come home every night feeling mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally exhausted. It's awesome! We've been working really hard, and we've seen some incredible miracles from it.

A few weeks ago in Zhanghua second ward, we visited a nursing home and asked if we could come back and do an activity with the old people there. We planned it as a district activity, so even though I moved areas, I was still able to go back. We sang hymns to the old people, and taught them the actions to a few primary songs. At first it was kind of awkward, but by the end we were having a lot of fun!

After we sang, we went and chatted with the old people a bit. Most of them only spoke Taiwanese, and some didn't speak at all, but thumbs up and smiles are pretty universal, so we were at least able to communicate a little bit with each one. We also spent a long time after chatting with the staff and sharing about our church. Afterwards we went home and went on with our missionary work, but we had no idea that there were still miracles coming. Yesterday morning we were at  church and a man approached us, told us it was his first time there, and asked where to go. Turns out he was also at the nursing home that day, and was impressed by the message we shared, so he thought he'd come check our church out! People really do pay attention to the little things we do everyday, and it's definitely our actions that make a difference more than our words.

Riding back from the nursing home as a district was a funny sight, so we snapped a pic at a stoplight. Now that we have another set of Elders, we can no longer call our district the Relief Society. We decided on Army of Helaman instead.

One more miracle of the week: my MTC companion, Sister Fisher, got called as my Sister Training Leader this transfer! This means that for as long as we're both in these areas, every six weeks we'll be able to spend 24 hours together doing missionary work. I got to be her very first exchange as an STL, and it was a joy to serve with her and to look back and see how much we've grown. I still have a long way to go, but I'm also very far away from the nervous little sister in the MTC panicking about learning Chinese. Sister Fisher has also changed a lot. She's confident and driven and full of new ideas. I couldn't be more excited that she's my STL! We took a picture to commemorate the occasion, and of course we had to use Line filters. I think we pull off the heavy eyebrows and goatee pretty darn well.

That's about it this week! Life's been pretty good. It's really cool to see Heavenly Father's hand in everything we do. The word 'coincidence' is pretty much no longer in my vocabulary. I know that this is the Lord's work, and as long as we give it everything we have, He will allow us to be part of incredible miracles.

Love you lots!

Hi Everyone!

The subject line is a lyric from a song in the Princess Diaries. Sister Hubner and I used to sing it after anything particularly miraculous happened while we were out doing missionary work. We ended up singing it as we biked home three or four nights a week. Life is pretty good!

Ok so first of all, PLOT TWIST, Sister Hubner and I both whitewashed out of Zhanghua second ward! She is training a new missionary down in Gaoxiong, and I whitewashed into Zhanghua first ward, a whole 20 minute bike ride away from my last area! I still see all my ward members every week on Sundays, which is pretty fun. My new companion is Sister Lin, and she is amazing! She's funny and kind and patient, and really good at not taking no for an answer. Which is an important missionary skill.

The other day we were biking back to the church, and I saw a monk in his full monk robes out riding a razor scooter and taking his dog for a walk. I love Taiwan.

This week we saw an amazing miracle. My old investigator from Daya, Maybe Later, got baptized! In every area there are certain people that you feel like you were called there specifically to meet. Maybe Later was one of those people. He had been an investigator for over a year, and the whole time he'd been reading the Book of Mormon, praying, and coming to church. Despite all of this, he had a lot of doubts and concerns. I knew he would get baptized eventually, but I figured it might take another year or two. I did not expect it to be only 7 weeks after I left! I'm incredibly excited for him, and I'm so glad I got the chance to meet him and share in a part of his conversion process. I firmly believe that conversion is a quiet miracle, but one of the biggest miracles that can happen. Only God has the power to change hearts and help people reach their full potential. Through following Heavenly Father's plan for us, we truly can discover the greatest joy imaginable.

Yesterday we were sweeping the streets with a bunch of old people. They were all really old, but they all looked about 20 years younger than they actually were. I asked one amah what the secret to staying young is. She told me: be happy and sing a lot! I will gladly take that advice.

Life is pretty good here in Zhanghua at the moment! Whitewashing is really busy, but we're already starting to see a ton of miracles. We have a great district, an awesome ward, and a really fun area. I'm so grateful that I have this chance to serve the people here in Taiwan. I love them so much, and it is a joy to be able to share with them the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Hope you all have a wonderful week!
lots of love!

Lettuce Turnip the Beet

Hi everyone!

We had a really cool fasting miracle yesterday. Our District Leader asked us to fast for ways to work with the ward. That very night, we had a family history themed activity at a member's house, and he invited some friends, a family of five! They really liked talking about family history, and agreed to let us come to their house some other time to help them set up a FamilySearch account. All the ward members were really excited to share about the gospel with them, and it was amazing. I don't think I've ever seen blessings come from fasting so quickly.

We have a rat in our ceiling. We've never seen him, he just skitters across every now and then in the evening. I've taken to calling him Geronimo.

The other day we were on our way to a 7-11 to make some calls. We had a bit of extra time before we had to be there, so we decided to swing into a Starbucks and see if we could talk to some people. The Taiwanese take Starbucks seriously. Most Starbucks here are architectural masterpieces. The one in question has a full second floor with an assortment of couches, armchairs, and barstools arranged in artful, comfortable clusters. We climbed the stairs to find that there were only two people in the entire room. Our choices were either a businessman on one end of the room, or a girl with earbuds in on the other side. We chose the girl, and walked over to talk. After chatting for a bit, she told us that she is actually a member who just hasn't been to church in a year or two. What was supposed to be a 7 minute chat ended up being almost an hour as she told us of the challenges she's facing and some of her reasons for leaving the church. We were able to listen and love her and offer our support. She's amazing! I know for a fact that Heavenly Father led us specifically to her. I felt His love for her so strongly, it was incredible.

This week was the Lantern Festival, and there were a lot of community parties with big light up stages and really loud music. The old people in Taiwan like to party more than the young people do I think. Taiwanese old people love a spectacle, so we got roped into going onto the stage and dancing more than once. At one of these parties, I was dressed as a strawberry, and Sister Hubner was dressed as a radish. The old people couldn't have been happier.

Have a great week! Love you all!
